Indian River Civic Center

The Indian River Senior Center was founded in 1970 by
Donald and Florence Mortlock. The original meetings were held at St. Marks
Episcopal Church in Millsboro. By the end of 1970 the membership had grown to 75
and consequently had to move upstairs to the larger hall. The Center took steps
to incorporate in 1971 and by the end of that year the membership had grown to
150. By the end of 1972 the membership grew to 430 members and the small space
became crowded. Due to the growth, the senior Center purchased a parcel of land
in the town of Millsboro for their future home. The Senior Center formed a
partnership and shared the facilities with the town of Millsboro. The building
was completed in mid 1980. The town purchased the property from the Senior
Center for the same price that the Senior Center had paid for it. The seniors
furnished the building with the necessities and negotiated a lease with the town
for 22 years. The agreement stated that the seniors would take care of the
maintenance and hall rentals. At the end of the lease the seniors informed the
town that it was unable to continue handling the rentals. The new lease was
negotiated at that time and we were in a better position to save for our own
building. The center provides the following activities for the seniors in our
area: aerobics, yoga, line dancing, golf, bowling, crafts including ceramics,
card playing, billiards, shuffleboard, and a library. There is lunch provided
each Wednesday along with a variety of entertainment, educational programs and
bingo. We also offer flu shots, tax preparation and defensive driving for
seniors.
On April 2009 we moved into our new center that is located behind the WA-WA on
route 113 on Irons Avenue. The Center has over 630 members today.
